Whys

Whys

It’s hot here,
by the Flatiron building.
The breeze,
a convection of
hot city breath.
Conversations take place
amongst the flocks
in the streets.

Perspiration, a communal
wash, on high today.
My pen slips
through my fingers
as though
it’s annoyed with me.

The hanging haze,
forms halos
around an antique
streetlamp, its lights
burn in the sun,
two dirty orange orbs,
why?

It all conspires,
for the gain
of all my whys.
Shadows of flat timber
cook
in the sun’s flame.

The busses churn,
and the sightseers
sit along its scalp,
on their way
to ground zero,
waiting to witness
what’s not there.

Billboards bristle
with pitches
to the peds.
They sweat
and ride the day,
walk the dogs,
suck cigarettes,
and crowd,
within the crowds.

Next,

a large fly
crashes my lap,
he’s dizzy in this heat,
as if he knows
I’ll not swat him,
I don’t
and wonder why.

The mercury
breaks records,
my pen slips,
and I watch
the girls,
crazy what I think,
they seem to float by,
on the hems of all their skirts.

I sit here
as the day
lays open.
A girl stops
and asks me
for directions.
A bird, a tiny bird,
lands near my feet,
he stands by me,
looking with me.

What have I done
to deserve
all this attention?
Hot here today,
amongst all
the whys.

An errant leaf,
brown, burnt,
no longer living,
falls to my lap
from the trees looking on.
I set it safe beside me
because it chose
me to fall to.

Who am I
to say it didn’t?
Just another why.

Wilbur Fisk, on the Train

Wilbur Fisk
On The Train

And on the train,
clack,
and clack,
sends me
almost to sleep,

but,
I sneak awake.
A jet carves
sky,
as a train
with wings,
we spy one another,
I’m sure.

Out my window,
weeds lean,
from a push
I cannot see.
A steel bridge
stands in the water,
more of us
drive its back.

The train stops
in Newark,
a cart
sits by itself
on the platform,
loaded with luggage
and no one around.

We leave together
on this train,
past a gutted
ex-factory,
trash on the tracks,
clack
and clack,
lures me.

I lean
toward the window,
and think of
all my years,
wanting to come,
are tears,
I’m confused
as we come
to a stop
at the terminal
of the air.

Just a moment
for our stop,
then clack,
and clack,
scrub shrubs
more trash,
and I go by.
But,
tears
have returned
to their storage.

No stop today
in North Elizabeth,
I thank you for that,
this is a local train,
but not that local,
today.

Vestibules
gather riders,
as ready
to birth them
to proper
stations,
and brakes cry
beneath us,
as they leave
their click clack
mother.
Rip rap hugs
tracks,
as vestibules
spew travelers.

And then,
clack and clack,
we roll again,
those of us that stayed.

The crowd thins
as the train
births her cargo,
the trip ages
as we do,
soon,
I’ll leave,
when the brakes cry
for me.

Clack and clack,
I won’t hear,
just those that
stayed.

In Traffic

In Traffic

I hit the brakes,
and the stop
makes me think
of his death.

In traffic,
my mind
sorts itself.

I find better
plans for new beginnings
as the streets
wind under me.
Rain pelts
the windshield
and I wonder why
the shuttle exploded,
and I quit work.

I live for now
in the car,
my island
on the move.

He lies
in the casket
healthy looking
in his death
I turn into
an exit
brake lights blaze,
we stop
I think,
what is wrong,
my question
to me.

When is my turn?
In traffic,
the world is narrow
and now
the future
is now, or never, until

the driveway
approaches,
and it gulps me into
what matters,

and that is…

us.

Diary

Diary

Cooked two magnificent
Red Snapper filets
last night.
Julienne summer squash
carrots,
zucchini, and chopped
basil.
I topped the snapper
with a visit
from my girlfriend
also,
a room temperature
banana chutney.

The Stag’s Leap
cabernet
bit the back
of my tongue.

Wrong,
what I’d said
to her.
The snapper was
pan seared
in an almost smoking
iron skillet.

I finished the
cook
in the oven
at 400
the juice from
one lemon
squeezed over the
veg.

This time,
I’m finished,
there is no heal
left for us.

Sea salt and fresh
ground pepper.

She left me
tonight
for good
but not on
an empty stomach.

There Is No Tomorrow

There Is No Tomorrow

You will not
close the door
on a sunset
tonight…

Every minute
a fortune passing
to seas
of was…

love is not worry,
risk was only that,
and there
is no point
in war…

we talk
of what we
have today,
and
need no more
than what
we have…

without tomorrow
memories
will be
remembered
priceless
when
tomorrow
was a sleep away…

doing nothing
is impossible
and anything
is possible
because
tomorrow
is unable to be…

now, walking
is more exciting,
than the most precious
vehicle
on earth,
watching clouds
cross sky,
more valuable
than whatever
was…

the here
the now,
is my dirt
and stone…

today
is the
day
I will spend it like there is no tomorrow…
